[Nayan/Zach] - Distraction
Who: Nayan and Zach
When: Saturday, 7/23
Where: A motel room in Fall City
Before/After: N/A
Warnings: Obsession and a bit of paranoia
The lamia is going to eat well...
Zachary was rather rudely awoken by a certain faerie dragon appearing above his head and divebombing his face with much angry chittering.
At first he tried to brush Neel away, but then he realized Neel was on Earth.
"Neel!" he exclaimed, bolting upright and trying to grab the little dragon. "How'd you get here!"
Neel's angry noises continued, as if he were scolding Zach for up and leaving him.
Zach couldn't help but laugh, and kept on laughing as Neel burrowed into his shirt. He was overcome with relief, and felt a little less alone now that his little dragon friend was with him. It was the best thing to have happened since he'd come to Earth.
It was a little while later when Nayan came in, and Zach was still distracted by Neel's presence, forgetting their argument and the growing distance that had been threatening them since. Instead, he grinned broadly as he looked at Nayan. "Nayan! Guess who found me!"
A moment later, he realized just how late it was, and his grin faded to a look of concern. "Where've you been?"
Truthfully, Nayan hadn't even really registered when he had gotten back to their room. He hadn't even really registered walking back to their room at all. All it had been was a near-endless stretch of time punctuated only by checking his cell phone for the thousandth time. It didn't matter, of course. Amy didn't use phones. Didn't have one, and had skirted around his offer to get her one. How was he supposed to know if she was okay if she didn't have a cell phone?
Still, he could hope. Maybe she would find a payphone and call him. They still had those on Earth, didn't they?
He almost didn't even notice Zach had asked him anything until he had settled on the edge of the bed. "Out. I'll need to head out again soon, though." He had to go find Amy, after all! She might have been hurt or in a hospital somewhere and she'd be all alone!
Out. It wasn't that it was obvious so much as it was Nayan not thinking to tell him where. It was avoidance, and Zach didn't like it. Sure, he'd been all for avoiding Nayan at first, but it was kind of getting out of hand. Staying out all night just to not have to deal with Zach?
That made him sad, actually. Even Neel, curled up in his shirt and (apparently) deciding to just nap there didn't help.
"Are you still avoiding me?" he asked, wanting to be sure before he made anything of it.
Did it mean that? Nayan didn't think so, but, then again, he didn't really care, either. Amy was out there somewhere, after all, and he was here. Not with her. Was she okay? "No. I just need to make sure she's okay."
Zach grew very confused, tilting his head at Nayan. "She who?" He hadn't mentioned anyone recently. Zach had just assumed Nayan had been avoiding him, not meeting people. Then again, he was a rogue. Maybe he was making connections, or whatever it was rogues did.
"Amy," he replied, as if it should have been perfectly obvious. Hadn't he mentioned her before? He could have sworn he had. He frowned, reaching for his phone and staring at it for a minute or two before realizing there weren't any messages and he set it down once again. If there weren't any messages from her, it clearly wasn't worth his time. "She's all right." Though he said it more for his sake than Zach's. "She'd tell me if she wasn't." Wouldn't she?
He hadn't mentioned her, at last not that Zach could remember, but the way Nayan was acting about her was a bit odd. "Who's Amy?" If she wasn't all right, would Zach be able to help?
"Just a girl I met." Not that Amy was just any girl. She was a perfect girl who could potentially be in trouble the longer Nayan wasn't around. Why hadn't she let him give her a cell phone, anyway? "She doesn't like phones, though." That was hardly an excuse, mind, but even so... "Maybe I should go now. Make sure she's fine." Zach wouldn't mind, would he? Of course he wouldn't!
"Did something happen to her?" Zach asked, a little worried. If she was Nayan's friend, then he wanted to help if he could.
"I don't know," he said, sounding exasperated. Zach hadn't been listening at all, had he? If she had just come back to the motel room, he wouldn't have this problem, but she hadn't really liked that idea much. He hadn't thought to question it at the time, as it meant she had somewhere to stay, but now... "But she could get into trouble if I'm not with her."
Zach blinked in surprise at the tone, growing confused. "I don't understand. She might be in trouble, but you don't know for sure? Did she email you saying she was in danger or something?"
"No. She doesn't have access to it." If Nayan had been thinking clearly, he would have realized just how strange that sounded. Everyone, even in Zenderael, had access to email, even if they didn't choose to use it. As it was, however, Nayan wasn't thinking clearly, and was checking his phone once again. Still nothing. Should he leave now? Surely, he'd be able to run into her sooner or later. Maybe if he looked, checked the places he usually ran into her, he'd find her.
Zach didn't know how common email was, so the idea of someone not having access wasn't farfetched. It could even have been because she had no power, or something. He'd heard that happened sometimes. "Well if she hasn't asked for help or anything, she's probably just sleeping," he suggested. It was dark out, though he wasn't sure what time it was. "Maybe you should get some sleep?"
He had come back here because of sleep. There was a little voice in the back of his mind to remind him of that, but he couldn't sleep. Not now. Not when she was out there and all alone. How tragic that must be, to not have anybody! Or maybe she did have someone, but whoever it was treated her badly. Nayan wasn't entirely certain he considered himself to be a good person, but he usually drew the line at hurting women.
"I can't." He shook his head. "Not until I know she's okay."
He frowned. No note or any other indication that this girl might be in trouble, and yet Nayan wouldn't even sleep until he could check for himself? That didn't seem like Nayan. "Do you know where she lives?"
"No." That might have been another red flag had Nayan been thinking clearly, but he had explained it away as her not trusting him enough at the time. Still, he had known her for a few days. Wasn't that enough time to build up that sort of trust? "She's never said."
That was definitely a red flag for Zach.
He moved the blanket out of the way and shifted his legs over the end of the bed, peering at Nayan with concern. "Okay, hold on. You don't know where she lives and she doesn't have a phone or email. How are you supposed to get in touch with her?" Even Zach had gotten over it to use a phone just to be able to reach people.
"We find each other." That was just how it worked. Why was that apparently so hard to Zach to grasp? Nayan rolled his eyes and glanced at his phone once again. Still nothing, which only made him worry more. He frowned, shifting to his feet. "What's with all the questions, anyway?" All Zach was doing was keeping him from finding her. Was he doing it on purpose? It certainly seemed like it.
"I always ask you questions," Zach reminded him. The fact that it seemed to be annoying was not lost on Zach, since Nayan had never minded it before. He was a little hesitant to ask yet another, but he felt he really needed to. "Why do you keep checking your phone if she doesn't use them?"
"Maybe she'll find a pay phone or something." Those were things! He had seen old Earth movies! One or two probably still existed. Maybe that would be where she was. Tucking his phone back into a pocket, Nayan crossed the room once again and headed for the door. "I need to go."
"But-" Zach had no idea what to say that would keep Nayan there. Whatever was going on, it felt more and more like something was wrong. But what was he supposed to do about it? Nayan wasn't really listening to him, and he had no way of keeping Nayan there without words...
Letting out a sigh, Zach slouched, resigned. "Don't stay out too late, huh? You need your sleep."
"Mmm-hmm," Nayan replied as he disappeared out the door once again, although he clearly neither heard what Zach said nor did he particularly care. He had gotten what he wanted, after all. Now all he had to do was find Amy again.
