When Alison pulled into the driveway, her father was already rushing down the sidewalk towards the car. His arms were around her as soon as she got out.

"I'm so glad you're all right. I kept calling but your phone was off."

"I'm sorry, dad. I was talking to the police."

Jim got out of the car and started down the driveway towards the pickup that had pulled up, not wanting to get in the middle of family affairs, but Alison waved and offered a, "Thanks," and he paused to wave before hopping in with his friends.

Her father watched them drive off, and turned back to Alison, hugging an arm around her shoulders and ushering her towards the house. "David told me what happened. What were you thinking? You should have left with him."

Alison rolled her eyes. "Can we please not talk about David?"

"We could try, but he's here, so that might be a little difficult."

Oh god why.

And there he was, standing in the door way as they approached, holding the door open with his hand while his leg kept the dogs back, his face showing a cross between relief and annoyance.

Alison froze for a second, but her father's coaxing encouraged her to keep walking. She didn't want to deal with any of this. She just wanted to take a nap.

Her father was quiet as he lead her into the kitchen, the dogs close on her heels and vying for attention. David closing and locking the doors behind them. She was settled into a chair at the table, and her father went to make her a cup of coffee. She smiled and leaned down to give Jasper and Trigger headpattings and rubbings. Dogs were the best.

"Did you get your pictures?" David asked. She caught the irritation in his voice and looked up at him in disbelief. He was watching her with the most annoyed look she'd ever seen him give.

"Yes," she answered simply, watching her father move about the kitchen. She didn't feel like challenging David, hoping the dogs would keep her occupied.

David, apparently, felt differently.

"You could've called."

"I was a little busy."

"Flashing photos and acting like you knew what was going on, you mean."

Alison rolled her eyes. "Trying not to get killed and help get rid of something that could have killed a lot of people. And then the cops came by and I had to answer questions."

"And in all that you didn't even think to call? It never occured to you that anyone would be worried about you?"

She glanced towards her father. He was pointedly ignoring the arguement, but not leaving the room, fetching milk from the fridge and a spoon from the drawer. As she looked back to David, she almost glared. "If I'd known you'd run to tell my dad on me, I would've called him."

"You don't give a shit about me, do you?"

"No, David, I do. What I don't give a shit about is your attitude."

"I worry about you! You could've gotten hurt and you don't even care that I just wanted you safe!"

"You didn't care about what was important to me. If you hadn't thrown a fit you would've been the first person I called once the thing was dead, christ."

Her father came over with that coffee, setting it down in front of her. He gave her a soft smile, then looked down at the dogs. "C'mon, now, let her have her coffee. She'll have plenty of time for you two later." He lured Trigger and Jasper off to the living room, keeping them busy with chew toys. Alison was a little dissappointed, honestly, but she did smile. Her father was a good man.

David waited until he'd left the room to start again. "I didn't 'throw a fit', I was trying to talk sense into you."

"By insulting me?"

"You weren't listening! You're so dense to everything going on around you, all you care about is yourself and your own goals. You never pay attention to what I want."

"You never tell me what you want unless I pry it out of you." She looked at him squarly. "In this case, I didn't care what you wanted. I had to get pictures. I have to show people what's going on."

"You really think people are going to care about a bunch of shoddy cell pics of some mechanized creature that got loose?"

"Mechanized?" She stared at him. "Now who's the one being dense?"

"Oh come on, Ali. Dragons don't exist, you know that. What else could it be?"

"If you'd stuck around you'd have seen just how real it was, you realize."

"It's a fucking machine, Ali. A robot that was probably a prop for some movie. You know how Hollywood is."

"Programmed to kill people?"

"So it had a few bugs in its programming-"

"No, David. You've got a few bugs in your brain. This isn't the first monster, it won't be the last, and if you're so determined to believe it's all some Hollywood thing, then why don't you go digging for the movie producer and the prop department responsible and prove to all of us that that's exactly what's going on."

David threw his hands up and turned away, storming off to the living room. "You talk some sense into her," she heard him say.

"My daughter is perfectly sound of mind, and if she believes these monsters are real, I am inclined to believe her."

"She's crazy!"

"She's my daughter, and I'll thank you not to insult her mental stability. If you can prove these monsters are mechanized creatures from a movie setting, I'll gladly help you convince her of it."

"Fine. Fine, okay. Say they are real. You're just going to sit by while your daugther risks her life for a few pictures?"

"She's very intelligent. If the risk became too great, I know she'd get out." Her father sounded very convincing. She was pretty sure he'd be singing a different tune once David was done, but she really appreciated his effort on her behalf.

She heard a heavy sigh, and then the front door opening and closing. A few moments later, she heard the lock click, and turned to glance down the hall, spying her father coming back from the door.

Trigger and Jasper came back into the kitchen when he moved to sit at the table next to her. He let her sit in silence, sipping at her coffee, Jasper's head on his knee while Trigger sat watching Alison.

After some time passed, and half her coffee was gone, he spoke. "You will be careful, right?"

"I will." She set her cup down and looked at him. "I'm sorry. If I'd known he'd come here I would've called."

"It's fine. So long as you're safe, that's all that matters."

Alison smiled.

"I'm going to call your mother. You finish your drink and then get some rest, all right?"

She nodded. "Thanks, dad."
