"They're assassins, right? Or rogues, or both," she said, tone something between guarded and exasperated. Why couldn't they have just used a damn gun instead, jeez, no one would have seen them at all, but no, they wanted to make a statement, had to use their knives, damnit, she was riling herself up again.

"Who knows?" he said. "Never met one, myself. Better hope you don't either."

Hoping for anything was starting to mean shit all, but she refrained from adding that tidbit of negativity to his meal.

"Why the warning?"

"Because you know just enough to get yourself in trouble." And that was as much as he was saying on the matter.

After a pause, she averted her gaze, looking to the people mingling among themselves, around each other. Enough to get in trouble? Did that mean she was on the right track?

They didn't know? Maybe they weren't reading their e-mails.

Or maybe he just didn't know, either.

"Do you care about what happens to this world?"

[zenpc]

"A whole fucking hell of a lot more than most people."

Unexpectedly, she said, "Thanks."

A beat. "I guess."

[zenpc]

He gave her a wry smile. "You guess," he echoed.

"You'd best be going, then." He'd said enough, and he wasn't going to say anything more. He glanced over the room, annoyed again when he still couldn't spot Zale, and returned to his food.

She cast him one last glance, then slid off the bench. Maybe Rhys was done with Mal and his group. But it probably wasn't wise to go back to him, not now that Roman knew she was sticking her nose into their business.
