The three of them were walking home together today. It was more common for students to walk in large groups now, but all of them were social misfits enough that they really only had each other to walk home with. It was fine. LeiLei didn't care that her collection of friends was so small.

It gave them a smaller group and that made them more likely to see something, didn't it?

LeiLei walked with her skeleton-umbrella against her shoulder, vigilant. It had stopped raining before classes let out, but the grey skies overhead threatened to start again any time now. A monster fight in the rain would be more dramatic than just gloomy clouds, she thought.

But it was all fantasy, really. She was already disappointed because she was pretty sure this would be another day of nothing happening.

LeiLei had been hearing all sorts of interesting things this past week. Some kids in the hallways were talking about seeing monsters--real monsters!!--at their neighbour's farms. There was, supposedly, a tree in the park now that looked exactly like one of the trees from the Undertow in Zen. And one of the teachers had ushered a palm-sized dragonfly out of a classroom, and LeiLei thought it looked an awful lot like a Ruby Sylphie, even though she'd only seen a glimpse of it.

Exciting times!

Even more exciting was that she ran into Harriet on the way out of school. Harriet played Zen! She had to be interested in all this stuff! LeiLei bounced up beside her just past the school's front steps. "Hi, Harriet!" was her chipper greeting. "Have you heard about the monsters?" Yup, just out of the blue like that. That was what LeiLei did.
